MADAGASCAR: Open Letter to the members of the United Nations

It's been over 18 months since the junta seized power in Madagascar leading the country into a disastrous situation in all areas. The institutions of the Republic and in particular justice are totally out of control. More than half a million people are victims of unemployment. Insecurity reigns in all the country. Yet Rajoelina continues to defy the international community outrageously ignoring the directives of the SADC and the ad hoc International contact group and continuing to take unilateral decisions.

Recently Rajoelina and his team have unilaterally put forward texts they pompously call "malgacho-Malagasy agreements" or new "Malagasy constitution".
The Malagasy people demand instead that the agreements signed in Maputo and Addis Ababa as well as sanctions are implemented quickly.
Decisions taken at the 30th Summit of the SADC, of 18 August 2010, in Madagascar, have advocated the resolution of the crisis in a neutral, inclusive and consensual way, based on agreements signed in Maputo and Addis Ababa. In the same declaration, SADC also reaffirms the continuation of international sanctions until the return to constitutional order; sanctions voted by the African Union, in March 2010, against 109 people including Rajoelina.
We ask the whole international community to actively support this decision, including its effective implementation.
As we approach the 65th General Assembly A United Nations General in New York, it is our duty as actors and observers, actively working for the return of law to place our call to the entire International Community.
We therefore call on all UN member countries to oppose any involvement of Madagascar in this General Assembly. It is inconceivable and offensive to the UN to give tribune to representatives of an illegal regime that is not recognized internationally, authors of coup, criminals and looters of their own country. Their place is elsewhere but not here in an institution which stands as a champion of human rights and democracy.
