Citizens of all countries, watchful of the conservation of the unique biodiversity of Madagascar, ask the Malagasy government and the United Nations to create an international commission in charge of investigating and stopping the illegal logging of rosewood in the different protected areas of the island, particularly in Mananara Nord, Marojejy, Makira and Masoala, which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. We ask for the strict application of Malagasy laws oriented toward the fight against the illegal exploitation of rosewood, the protection of the fragile ecosystems and the defence of the local populations’ interests who depend on it. We demand the release and the dropping of charges against the environmental activist Armand Marozafy, who has been incarcerated for having denounced the rosewood traffic. We also demand the protection of Augustin Marozafy who had his life threatened and has been forced to live in European exile for the same reasons.
